Anyone that knows me well, knows that I have a saint for a husband. He is simply the best, always puts me first, and generally puts up with my craziness and hair-brained DIY ideas. Well, he turned the big 5-0 last fall so I knew I wanted to throw him a surprise party. I, of course, went crazy searching for ideas on Pinterest and dedicated an entire board to party ideas. My budget was limited, but I wanted everything to be great for him to remind him just how much I truly appreciate all he does.
Finding a location on a budget was no easy task. There just aren’t very many places around here that had a room I could use that wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg. Luckily, one of our favorite pizza places, Marion’s Piazza, had a room and it was only $100 and the entire cost of the room was applied to the food and beverages we bought so it was really free!!! Now that was my kind of deal!! I plopped down my deposit, took some pics of the room, and got started planning.
I tend to be sort of a girly girl and I certainly didn’t want his party to feel all girly so I started by picking a masculine color palette of black and tan. I figured with that as the foundation I couldn’t get too girly with it. Here are some of my Pinsperations for the decorations…..

Here are how my versions of these ideas turned out.
The Cakery, a local bakery made the cake based on the picture I gave them from above with my color choices. The almond flavored cake not only looked amazing, but it was so delicious!!! They totally knocked it out of the park….. I could not have been happier with how it turned out and I will use them for all of my cakes from now on.
The centerpieces for each of the tables were super easy to make. First I used a burlap table runner down the center of each table from Hobby Lobby. Then I added some burlap ribbon that I gathered with black deco mesh that I just tied about every 18 inches or so with a pipe cleaner. Then I added mason jars (of course) filled with coffee beans and electric tea lights. I tied a brown tag that said “Happy 50th” on each jar with twine. I made the little pumpkins with scrapbook paper and more pipe cleaners and added some black sparkly pumpkins that I found in the Dollar Section at Target.
Then I added a variety of black frames that I bought at the dollar store that had lots if different sayings about turning 50 and getting older and . I printed the sayings in the frames on scrapbook paper as well to add a little more interest and variety.
At the food tables I added a happy birthday banner that I made with more scrapbook paper. I used the Ellison machine thingy at school to cut out the letters and added white hole reinforcements simply because I liked the way they looked. I made 3 of the topiary trees and spread those out across the food tables as well and added a few more of the frames with the sayings about getting old and then another with a list of what things cost the year he was born and what the big movies and songs were that year. For the big “50” I projected it onto my board at school, traced it, cut it out, and covered it with black glitter. Because I was not permitted to attach anything to the walls at the restaurant I then mounted it on foam core board so I could just lean it against the wall on top of the table. The basket on the end of the table was full of little burlap bags of Hershey Kisses with a sign that said “Thanks for Celebrating with us as Jim Kisses His 40’s Good-Bye.”
The frame with the pictures came from Hobby Lobby when it was half-off of course and I just used my staple gun to attach the twine to the back of the frame and then I used small clothes pins to attach the pics of him from his childhood. Now it is hanging above my desk in my office at home.
The party was a couple of weeks after his actual birthday. I took him to our favorite place for birthday dinners on his actual birthday and gave him the book of 50 Reasons Why I Love Him. I think he was happy with that and had chalked it up as a quiet transition into his 50’s……silly man!!!
I think that pretty much sums it up. Overall it was a fun night with friends and family and it was a Total Surprise for The Hubs…..WINNING!!!!! Here’s to the next 50 years!!!
Have a Great One All!
